Tren de Hershey/Electric Hershey Train/Ferrovia Hershey

"Casa Blanca and Matanzas the only electric railway in Cuba"

In 183t the La Habana to Guines Railway opened. Was the first Cuban railway ("Camino de hierro") and the first Latin American railway. Until the beginning of the Second World War the railway system of the island experienced a rapid expansion mainly due to transport of sugar cane.

Nowadays the railway service is limited to a few suburban passenger lines, in addition to the main Havana-Santiago route, anything but high-speed . The only electric line on the "Isla Grande" is the "Tren de Hershey", 92 km from Casa Blanca - the district beyond the Havana bay - to Matanzas; I gpt the chance to travel next to the driver for the entire route, a simply amazing adventure.
